Revamping SCADA system for greenhouse monitoring
Since the 90’s the Botanic Garden in Meise uses Schneider Electric PLC’s and a Monitor Pro SCADA for the monitoring and operation of the greenhouses. The system controls the heating, the dampening and the ventilation.
Many of the existing greenhouses will be replaced within a few years by new ones with corresponding new control and supervision systems. In the meantime, the current installation must be maintained. Given the limitations of the Monitor Pro SCADA this became problematic because it still runs under OS2.
The purpose of the Botanic Garden was to modernize the supervision without changing the existing PLC architecture.
The challenge was mainly to offer a system that is able to communicate with the old PLCs and their no longer supported protocols. Thanks to years of experience and knowledge of the Schneider Electric range, ARCsom has been able to offer a customized solution.
The existing Monitor Pro SCADA communicated with the TSX67 PLC via ETHWAY (UNITE over Ethernet). It has to work with the M580 plc from Schneider Electric in view of future developments. Since the TSX67 can only communicate via ETHWAY, it was decided that communication would take place via 2 PLC “gateways”. As a result the new Citect SCADA communicates with the M580 via Modbus TCP/IP. The Citect SCADA communicates also via Modbus TCP/IP with a TSX57 PLC (the predecessor of the M580). Unlike the M580, this offers the possibility of communicating with the TSX67 via ETHWAY.
We created a system that is ready for the future. The day that the existing greenhouses are no longer in service, the Citect SCADA and the M580 PLC can be used for other purposes. For example energy monitoring.
